Youths mark APEC science festival

China, as an APEC member, will continue to make contributions to improving
peace and science development in the Asia and Pacific regions, State Councillor
Chen Zhili said Tuesday in Beijing at the opening ceremony of the APEC Youth
Science Festival.
On behalf of the Chinese Government, Chen extended warm greetings and welcome
to the 1,200 students and teachers from member countries of APEC (Asian and
Pacific Economic Co-operation).
The APEC Youth Science Festival is important for cultivating youngsters'
creativity and propelling common scientific development in the APEC region, said
Chen.
She said the central government highly regarded the maturity and education of
the country's 360 million teenagers.
"We will unremittingly support scientific activities and technology
innovations for young people... I hope all of you will enjoy the colourful
activities arranged by the Chinese committee for the festival," she the
participants.
She encouraged them to work hard for future development of the Asia and
Pacific regions, saying youngsters were the hope of any nation.
Minister of Science and Technology Xu Guanhua said he hoped that during the
festival students would learn from each other and build up consolidated
friendships to help create a rosy future for the Asia and Pacific regions.
Various activities, such as scientific lectures, technological exhibitions,
student forums, competitions and visits to historical sites as well as Beijing
residents' homes, were all ready for the festival participants, he said.
Tuesday afternoon, students started forums to discuss basic and applied
scientific issues, such as space and aviation, life sciences, biological and
medicine technology, ecological systems and the environment, information and
communications technology.
"What will the future home look like (with the use of new building materials,
furniture and electrical appliances)?" "How you evaluate Bill Gates"... and
other topics will be discussed by students.
