Snow blankets NE. China, traffic affected (Xinhua) Updated: 2004-12-19 17:10
A heavy snow has haunted most part of northeast China's Liaoning since
Saturday night, causing major airport and expressways in the province to close
for the time being.
According to the provincial expressway administration, major expressways in
Liaoning has been closed since 5:00 Sunday morning.
But the expressway
from Shenyang, the provincial capital, to Dalian, an open coastal city, and the
section of the Shenyang- Dandong expressway are still open to traffic.
Thanks to the timely closure, no road accident has been reported on these
expressways upon the snowfalls, the administration added.
Also closed was the Taoxian International Airport in the provincial capital
of Shenyang on Sunday morning. The snow has continued by press time, with poor
visibility, local sources said.
It is the heaviest snowfall in Liaoning since winter began this year, which
interrupted a continuous warm weather, local meteorologists said.
A total of 7,000 environmental sanitation workers have been dispatched to
remove the thick layer of snow on major streets of Shenyang.
In a related development, northeast China's Jilin Province, adjacent to
Liaoning, has been blanketed by a heavy snow too since the early hours of
Sunday.
The provincial meteorological bureau has given three warning signals for
heavy and extremely heavy snowfalls. It forecast the snowfalls will continue
into Monday.
Since 8:00 Sunday morning, the Changchun Airport in the provincial capital of
Jilin has been closed, together with the expressway linking the city to
Shenyang.
Major streets in Changchun city are now blanketed by ice and snow, dampening
traffic, local sources said.
